"SCarborough Fair (reprise)"

Billboard Top 10 Americana artist Grant Maloy Smith joins forces with Marimba master Kevin Lucas to create a whole new version of the 17th-century song, “Scarborough Fair.” Grant updated the lyrics of this bittersweet love song and added a chorus to bring it in line with contemporary songwriting standards. The duo went into the studio and created a lush version that builds from a beautiful acoustic beginning to a powerful rock/orchestral finish. The stereo mix was done by Grant, and mastered by Jeff Silverman of Palette MSP in Nashville.

"I collaborated with master percussionist Kevin Lucas to produce a unique version of the classic song "Scarborough Fair." Originally written in the 17th century, this song gained popularity with Simon and Garfunkel in the 1960s. I kept the first verse but rewrote the others and added a chorus, which the song never had before. We recorded a distinctly different version of this beloved song, blending folk elements with marimba, aluphone, and electric guitar to create a wholly new experience for our fans.

“I loved this song since I heard the Simon and Garfunkel version as a child. I didn’t understand the lyrics at the time, but the melody entranced me. I didn’t know it had been written in the 17th century. Except for the first verse, which is perfect, the other verses describe the man giving his woman a series of increasingly impossible tasks to win her back. I revised it to be more modern and wrote an original chorus to convey the rest of the story. The irony is that my character is telling Kevin’s character to find her, bring her flowers, and treat her in a way that is likely to draw her to Kevin, not me. LOL - that’s what he deserves! My favorite part of shooting the video was playing the lead guitar in the cemetery wearing my black duster. Kevin called me ‘Hillbilly Slash,’ which I embrace.”
