Feature Film, comedy, composer of original score, leading actor
Kookie Woods, a poor high school sophomore, is tired of being teased by the basketball team for not sporting the cool clothes. So, he devises a crazy scheme to rob credit card payments to buy what he needs to fit in. But when Kookie's caper becomes the case in the latest silly reality show "Who Wants to Marry a Secret Agent?" he learns a valuable lesson about appreciating his own reality. This was the second film produced by SCENE:TEENS, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping at-risk teens learn a craft - film making - from professionals. A sequel to first film HOPE HIGH, this one picks up some time shortly after that story ended, and bumbling Special Agent SAM BRINDLE (this time played by Ken Rondeau) is funnier than ever. Film composer Grant Maloy Smith makes his feature film acting debut as insane crocodile hunter and game show host wanna-be JAKE LAWRENCE. At first JAKE is comic relief as the prima donna game-show host with the outrageous Sydney twang, but later we see the darker side of him, as he plots to kill KOOKIE, first with a whacky machine, and finally with a revolver.
❝This was the first feature length film that I both scored and acted in. And I had a big role, so there were lots of lines, and more than 20 long days of shooting for me. In Extra Credit, I played semi-crazy Aussie JAKE LAWRENCE - a washed-up has-been. Basically this character is an alter-ego of the real-life croc hunter and naturalist Steve Irwin (who sadly died a few years ago). Learning the Sydney twang was as much fun as scoring the film months. Being the composer and coming in at the end of the process, I was always envious of the special bond that the actors and production crew had. Now I know what it's like, and I will always treasure it. We had stress -- and lots of fun.❞
