Writing

Their search takes them across the sandy seas to neighboring city-states, after they make their own windtruck to do it. They enlist the help of a sympathetic red-headed Gatekeeper along the way. They begin to see that their civilization is not as simple as they had previously believed, as a seedy subculture unfolds before their eyes. Their search for Ham takes them ultiimately to the Grelling, a mythical mountain range in the center of the seas, which they must find a way to cross.
They discover a way through the craggy cliffs, with the help of the Swimmers, a race of people who breathe in the water, and who guide them through the watery channels to the other side. One adventure leads to another, as they negotiate the downspill, a viscous pink river that claims Ham's father Sampson.
The troupe finally reaches the city on the other side, and will ultimately find their son, but that's not the end of the story. They rescue the child slaves that he had fallen in with and bring them back to their city to live as a family. They learn a lot about their world, and themselves, in the journey. The origin of the mysterious cylinder, and how the Swimmers relate to it and their planet, is revealed in the shocking end of Gatekeeper Magic.
