Code of Ethics

Code of Ethics - poster
1999, Feature Film, Suspense
JO DEANGELO (Melissa Leo, Academy Award nominee) is a government Medicaid administrator. Her department has developed a computer program that uses advanced techniques to identify people who are obtaining state funded medical care illegally. But a vicious murderer has invaded the computer network. To her horror, JO finds that the game is forcing her to choose victims, which he then murders. The game also provides her with clues which she must track down in order to stop the killer before he strikes again. In a deadly game of brinksmanship, JO and the killer try to stop each other. Along the way, JO learns some important lessons about herself and how she has been hiding from the life that she wants. The film races to a suspensful climax when the killer goes after a final target: JO herself, who is about to expose him. The final scenes as the hunter and hunted battle to survive are heartpounding. Jonathan Walker turns in a sensitive performance as MARTIN, JO’s love interest, who becomes a suspect along the way. Olinda Turturro and Dechen Thurman are memorable in supporting roles, and David Beecroft is a powerful presense as a state legislator and “heavy.”

The BOXed Man

Boxed Man - Poster
BOXED MAN is all laughs from the first scene, but it’s also an old-fashioned story about a young man trying to make good. Raised by his grandmother, since childhood ACE comes out of college clueless but desperate to earn enough money to get her from the nursing home. His dreams of riches are met with unyielding reality at his first job, selling boxes, as one zany character after another crosses his path - including his truly psychotic boss EDWARD. But he meets some good folks along the way too, including love interest BONNIE.

He uncovers a plot to discredit him and steal his commissions, which sets into motion a comic and satisfying ending. ACE doesn't get everything he wanted, but he learns a lot along the way.

Oneida

Oneida
I was hired by the Onedia indian tribe of upstate NY to write the score for a “docudrama” which they had produced. This chronicles the life of their greatest leader, Oskanondoanha. The Oneidas were one of the few tribes which sided with the white colonists in the revolutionary war, fighting alongside Americans to gain their independence from Great Britain. This was a difficult story, filled with great travail.

I am very happy with the way the score came out for this movie. I was striving for a rich sound, at once beautiful and haunting, and with the dogs of war barking in the background with percussion and horns. It was really a great joy and honor to work with the Oneida people on this score.

The Paradox Parallel

The Paradox Parallel
1998, Short film, science fiction comedy
A series of seemingly disconnected events haunt a troubled young man, who believes that a Jungian kind of connection must exist among them. He is humored by his wife, who loves him but believes he is slightly crazy. At the same time, he is encouraged by a strange story from a local second-hand shop owner, played by the late Tiny Tim. Writer/Director Mark Frizzel is a noted stop motion animator, and he created his own charming low-tech effects for this talky, tongue-in-cheek science fiction short film.

Rather than mugging to the camera with the score, I wrote it mostly serious, but with a playful edge. Due to the very nature of this bizarre story, it was just good fun to work on, and nice to work with Mark.

Bad Hair Day

Bad Hair Day
All kinds of things go through a young woman’s mind as she deliberates what to do with her hair in a chic LA hair salon, in this half-fantasy, half-farce. The characters whom inhabit her trance are as memorable as they are cliche.

The score for this quirky, dreamlike comic short film is just the same - lyric, bouncy, and pseudo-serious.

Shrub

Shrub - poster
An odd but charming short film about a young girl’s discovery of an inner “room” inside an enormous shrub outside her house. When she enters this world, she hears echoes and voices from the past. She soon figures out that the events that she is learning about are somehow related to her own mother’s choldhood years before, and some dramatic events which occured. Suddenly her present situation makes sense, and she gains a new understanding of how her life has come to be the way it is.

I wanted a lush, orchestral sound for this film - and to underscore the childlike charm of her mystical discoveries. Shrub was an interesting and lovely project to work on.

Pray for Power

Pray for Power - Poster
HEATHER (Lisa Boyle) has been struggling in Boston to break into the high stakes world of modeling for years. Just as she is on the brink of her first major breakthrough, she witnesses a brutal murder. Although she tries to conceal her identity, it is not long until the killers learn of her existence, and Heather along with her reluctant boyfriend JAMIE, find themselves being pursued throughout Boston by deadly criminals.

Without warning, HEATHER and JAMIE are pulled headlong into a nocturnal world of high stakes money laundering, blackmail and murder. The two are, dragged onto a rocket ride through the lurid underbelly of Boston after midnight. When, in addition, the press links HEATHER to the high profile in murder case, she finds her career spiraling toward disaster as the killers continue to close in on her.

It is not long until HEATHER realizes that she has no choice, but to confront the villain’s head on. She uses herself as bait to trap the killers, setting the stage for the story's violent climax, which takes place seventeen stories above the city of Boston. At this moment, her only choice is to … Pray for Power.

When Brad first showed me the great look of this film, and I experienced its raw humanity, I knew that the score had to be as tough and uncompromising as the film and story itself. I wanted it to be gritty, but using the orchestra as the underbelly, but use modern percussion and guitars for flavor and edge. I really like the way the score turned out. I had written a James Bond like opening titles theme, but Brad and Marc really wanted a tough-sounding rock song, which wove in the main aspects of the song, so I dipped into my high school years listening to Alice Cooper, and wrote the title track “Pray for Power,” which I still enjoy listening to today.

Serial Intentions

Serial Intentions
2001, Feature film, thriller
Detective STEVE MCCORMACK (Mark Grant) of the Massachusetts State Police, is still recovering from a terrifying shoot-out, in which a woman was gunned down while he pled with the attacker not to kill her. But a serial killer is on the loose in a small town not far from the big city, and he is sent with a rookie officer, JAMIE GARRETT (Christy Scott-Cashman), to investigate. At first the small town seems idyllic, and they are welcomed by SHERIFF GREGORY (Ken MacDonald). But not all the residents are so accomodating, a hostage incident haunts mark grant's characterand they find themselves at odds with each other and with half the town. When yet more killings occur, and they are stil without clues, STEVE calls in an old friend, reporter VIRGINIA MADDEN (Erin Gray, of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century fame, as well as Baywatch and Silver Spoons) to publicize the events. Soon enough they find themselves at the center of a maelstrom, in which they become both the hunters and the hunted -- by a remorseless killer bent on even more killing. Or is there more than one killer?

The music for this film is "orchestral, with an edge," reflecting the high-tech method in which the killer hunts his victims. Music clips as well as a video trailer are available. Hope High

Hope High
2003, Feature film, comedy
This was the first film produced by SCENE:TEENS, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping at-risk teens learn a craft - film making - from professionals. Seven mis-matched teenagers from an inner city high school are struc by the tradgedy, when one of their own is killed by a bomb. Bumbling Special Agent SAM BRINDLE comes into the picture to track down the bomber.

I came into this picture near the end of shooting - when several source cue songs needed to be recorded. First, a comic rap number was needed for one of the protagonists, a character named KOOKIE WOODS, the result is the track below of the same name. Then a more serious song was needed, called WHY, and beautfully sung by Wynell and Jason, two of the young actors. Finally WE ARE EACH OTHER, written and sung by Wynell. I was struck by the raw talent of these young people.

  • WE ARE EACH OTHER - sung by Wynell > HH_We_are_each_other

Kookie Woods, a poor high school sophomore, is tired of being teased by the basketball team for not sporting the cool clothes. So, he devises a crazy scheme to rob credit card payments to buy what he needs to fit in. But when Kookie's caper becomes the case in the latest silly reality show "Who Wants to Marry a Secret Agent?" he learns a valuable lesson about appreciating his own reality. This was the second film produced by SCENE:TEENS, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping at-risk teens learn a craft - film making - from professionals. A sequel to first film HOPE HIGH, this one picks up some time shortly after that story ended, and bumbling Special Agent SAM BRINDLE (this time played by Ken Rondeau) is funnier than ever. Film composer Grant Maloy Smith makes his feature film acting debut as insane crocodile hunter and game show host wanna-be JAKE LAWRENCE. At first JAKE is comic relief as the prima donna game-show host with the outrageous Sydney twang, but later we see the darker side of him, as he plots to kill KOOKIE, first with a whacky machine, and finally with a revolver.

This was the first feature length film that I both scored and acted in. And I had a big role, so there were lots of lines, and more than 20 long days of shooting for me. In Extra Credit, I played semi-crazy Aussie JAKE LAWRENCE - a washed-up has-been. Basically this character is an alter-ego of the real-life croc hunter and naturalist Steve Irwin (who sadly died a few years ago). Learning the Sydney twang was as much fun as scoring the film months. I taught myself by using the accent on the unsuspecting for weeks leading up to shooting. Everywhere I went: grocery stores, the post office - basically anywhere where they didn’t know me, I would pretend to be an Aussie. That was a great way to get good fast. Being the composer and coming in at the end of the process, I was always envious of the special bond that the actors and production crew had. Now I know what it's like, and I will always treasure it. We had stress -- and lots of fun.

L’estinzione

L'estinzione
A short, dream-like film, in which a man is confronted with the consequences of his actions, and ultimately, achieves redemption. This was Team Medford's Debut film, a classic mob tale which won the 2006 Filmerica 72 Hour Film Challenge.

This was my first film with “the mobsters” Mike Ianero and Jon Pierce, and it really set the stage for our later projects, including FAMILY GATHERING and THE MOB: A MUSICAL. These guys are real gems to work with, and they do great work.

A Bridge Too Slow

a bridge too slow
In this upside-down world, people live in cars. They go to work in office complexes which are inside busses and trucks parked along the roads and bridges. Courthouses, offices, and banks are large trucks and panel vans.

In this quirky short comedy, everyman JIM PORTER (played by Grant Maloy Smith) faces the challenge of his life. A large corporation is using the courts and eminent domain to have Jim and his entire neighborhood evicted from the bridge they have called home for decades, in order to make room for a more upscale development. Jim and his neighbors fight for their rights in this short 3 minute film, set within the context of a local Boston news broadcast. Staged as a black comedy.

What I remember most about this project is the long day of shooting in a Boston February, and freezing my rear end off, being outside the entire day. But looking back it was whacky fun, especially working with the Team Medford production group led by Dawn Natalia. A few days later, in my cozy and warm studio, I had a blast writing a perky and uptempo theme, which I am proud of. It was meant to remind you of a British sit-com theme song.

Family Gathering

family gathering
Short film
Team Medford Productions - comedy, played AGENT GRUNT, one of two FBI agents monitoring a family of mobsters in a restaurant, from a surveillance van parked outside. This comedy takes place at the end of a three-year investigation, and by this time the FBI agents are sick to death of each other, the cramped quarters, and endless hours of listening to monotonous conversations from their subjects. Now the mobsters seem ready to finally spill the salient points of their illegal activities, but are they listing the ingredients to a massive bomb, or is a pasta sauce from the old country? And will the FBI agents be able to thwart the plot before they kill each other?

This my reunion with Jed Griswold. We had played together in EXTRA CREDIT a few years ago, and here was another chance to become dim-witted cartoon characters with each other again!

Anemia

anemia
In this short comedy, a man visits his doctor to discuss the results from his medical exam. He is run down and exhausted all the time, in short, he is anemic. Suddenly the doctor's office walls moves aside and the man bursts into a vibrant yet forboding show tune! He laments his condition, which is caused by a lack of iron. As the short song unfolds we learn that he is, in fact, a vampire, and yet he has an embarassing secret - he doesn't like the taste of blood!

The centerpiece of this three minute comedy short is the broadway-esque paen that our vampire sings so passionately, written and arranged by Grant Maloy Smith. Grant also did the voice-over for the doctor character, and some foley. A brilliant performance by actor Bobby Sylvia brings the character to life, or death, as the case may be!

This was a great challenge and lots of fun. The assignment: write a show tune that a guy will jump up and sing out of the blue, as if on stage. In the lyrics we will learn that he is a vampire and yet he doesn't like the taste of blood -- so it's affecting his health and spirit. And make it funny, they said. Hmmm. OK, I thought about that for a few days, and came up with the basic musical theme, then made a two minute orchestration from it. I wrote the words in about an hour, and sang it using my best Boris and Natashia slavic accent. I hope you enjoy this campy send-up.

The Mob: A Musical

the mob main
2007, Feature Film, Comedy
Broadway showtunes meet the Sopranos in this one of a kind "mobster musical", meant to be a send-up with heart, and lots of fun all around.
FBI undercover agent Hopper (Jed Griswold), last seen in the film "Family Gathering", enlists fellow agent Tommy Marone (Bobby Sylvia) to gain the trust of some notorious mobsters, and trick them into staying at a "safe house" that is anything but. The mobsters have a hard time adjusting to their new rustic surroundings, in a hick New England town completely lacking in the luxuries and conveniences that they have grown to love. Brand new local cop Lt. Campbell (Grant Maloy Smith) gets involved, much to their chagrin.

Now being extended to a full length motion picture with Hollywood backing, the film will be reshot completely resolution in 2010. The final film will have approximately 10 songs.

Solitaire

Solitaire
2008, Feature Film, Drama
Set in 1998, Solitaire follows the story of four young men growing up on the wrong side of the tracks in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Without good role models in their lives, they turn to a life of petty crime, stealing video tapes. Eventually they are tricked into stealing a box of signed TITANIC tapes, but discover that it contains $250,000 worth of heroin. Bad turns to worse, and one of the boys is arrested. Protagonist Ritchie finally comes to terms with the loss of his father, and finally makes the right choices about what to do with his life.

To hear some cues from the original score, please see the Solitaire cues page.

I enjoyed working with Christian again, after a long hiatus since EXTRA CREDIT (2004). I really liked the feel of this film. The interplay between the young stars seemed very real to me. This movie called out for a street-hip score with a throaty saxophone, and some urban rythms, and I had a great time creating them. The premiere in Providence was a great evening, and I hope that this film gets distributed widely.
