No-hit Wonder
NO-HIT WONDER is available as a download it from iTunes and other music services! Please search on GRANT MALOY SMITH.
No-Hit Wonder is a perverse celebration of getting nowhere in the music business but still having a lot of fun. I have written many songs, but this was the first time I tried to put them together into a cohesive work, with a general theme and musical motif. I spent a lot of time thinking and rethinking the arrangements toward that end

❝That's a Good Thing❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
With a little more time
And a little more faith
She’ll be redemption
She’ll be my grace
My saving grace
With a little more heart
And a little less head
She’ll find the passion
Like when she said:
“Show me someplace that’s forever
Far above the moon
Say we’ll always be together”
But now she’s going
Oh, and that’s a good thing
And she won’t hold my hand
But that’s all right
She’ll call me “daddy”
And that’s a good thing
Yeah she can break my heart
But that’s all right
With a little more hope
And a little less fear
She’ll find perception
She’ll learn to see
And learn to hear
With a little more truth
And a little more dare
She’ll rediscover
The time we shared
“Show me someplace that’s forever
Far above the moon
Say we’ll always stay together”
But now she’s going
Oh, and that’s a good thing
And she won’t hold my hand
But that’s all right
She’ll call me “daddy”
And that’s a good thing
Yeah she can break my heart
But that’s all right

❝When I Fly❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
I’m all about dreaming
But the daylight gets in my eyes
I need to find some passion
I need to find the time
It’s a mystery you know
I always wake up alone
It’s all about learning
There’s a Tuesday I can’t take back
A bright and noisy main street
Somewhere in Iraq
I remember it all –
The last day that I could fall
When I fly
All I am is weightless
When this chair
Becomes my chariot
Yes, I can fly
But maybe you don’t see me
Just raise your eyes above the ground
And listen for the sound
When I fly
I’m all about smiling
I don’t hear what the neighbors say
Dreams can drive you crazy
Or they can light the way
I’ve been through it myself
Alone in my private Hell
It’s all about living
Let the rain run right through your hair
Turn around in circles
Taste the Sunday air
There’s a stream in the street
I wish I could splash my feet
When I fly
All I am is weightless
When this chair
Becomes my chariot
Yes, I can fly
But maybe you don’t see me
Just raise your eyes above the ground
And listen for the sound
When I fly
Heartache can hypnotize
I need to take my own advice
And blink away the image
That was freezing me inside
It’s strong arms that got me here
Straight up - have no fear
I can do anything
As long as I have my wings
When I fly
All I am is weightless
When this chair
Becomes my chariot
Yes, I can fly
But maybe you don’t see me
Just raise your eyes above the ground
And listen for the sound

❝It Must be Love❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
We were young
And right on the money
Laughed at the moonlight
But it wasn’t funny
So fast - we grew into strangers
passions apart
never dealing with dangers
Then we lashed our broken backs to the mast
“it’ll all work out,” we said
We had a dream
We had it right it here
And we’ve got to get it back
So let’s go on, on with the madness
And off, off with the gloves
‘cause from over here where I’m standing
we’re still in love
We’re still because:
It must be love - this lifetime of moments
Holding on
Oh, it must be love
We have fears
But they can’t defeat us
Pain can surround us
And pleasure can cheat us
We have fears
But they can’t defeat us
Pain can surround us
And pleasure can cheat us
So close - We are too close to focus
Words that could heal
Too often choke us
But with all the bad news
blowing out the fire
It’s the only world in town
We had it right -
we had it right it here
But it seems we let it drown
So let’s go on, on with the madness
And off, off with the gloves
‘cause from over here where I’m standing
we’re still in love
We’re still because:
It must be love
‘Cause nothing else matters
When I think of you
When I look at you
It must - it must be love
Once in a lifetime
Holding on
It must be love

❝Your Fire❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
All the kids with brand new clothes
who made fun when let them
they never had to walk to school
their parents came to get them
every time you watched them drive away
That's your fire
your fire
You always had to share a room
with a sister or a brother
and though you fought
you always got
kisses from your mother
Every time you closed your eyes and prayed
That's your fire
Your fire
Your life - your times
All the hopes you hold inside
Cruel words you can't retract
Love lost and then won back
These are all the things that feed the fire
Your fire
Your first love - working up
the courage just to stammer
Picked last when teams were cast
You know, you smiled like it don't matter
Every time your heart just brioke in tow
That's your fire
Your fire
Porch talks with grandpad
Sun still bright at seven
He'd stand and take your hand
he said "I'll wait for you in heaven"
The first time you heard your father cry
That's your fire
Your fire
Chorus
The dog you loved with all your soul
The night you watched her puppies born
Years passed, she got old
kisses from your mother
Black eyes from schoolyard fights
Stood up on school dance night
Games lost and wounded pride
kisses from your father
He said I'll wait for you
Oh, I'll wait for you in heaven
Your fire

❝All I Did Was Love You❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
The moon shines
like a brand new dime
like it did before
So why's my life so different
as I reach your door?
The glass cat on your welcome mat
waits with me a while
But that's enough reflection
I want to see your smile
I've had times
that seemd so fine
That I thought it must be love
But a kiss is a kiss
It was never like this
Oh, no - I don't know how
I hit the jackpot now
and all I did was love you
I don't know why
I'm just an average guy
and all I did was love you
all I did was love you
Instrumental
I knocked twice and I rang the bell
How long should I wait?
I love your imperfections
But maybe I'm too late
I sit down and I watch the street
It must be quite a sight
A sad sack on your welcome mat
Who'll wait for you all night
I've had times
that seemd so fine
That I thought it must be love
But a kiss is a kiss
It was never like this
Oh, no - I don't know how
I hit the jackpot now
and all I did was love you
I don't know why
I'm just a simple guy
and all I did was love you
all I did was love you
Oh, no - I don't know how
I hit the jackpot now
and all I did was love you

❝Don't Want to Be Lonely❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
Don't want to be lonely
all my life
why can't I be happy, happy, happy
all the time?
Don't want to be boring
cry til I float
I've got to find someone
who can grab my heart
and grab my throat
But it's now or never
I can't wait one more year
Yes, it's now or never, my dear
I know sooner or later
This dream will come true
Sooner or later she'll come
shining through
Don't want to be lonely
All the time
Don't want to go on
like I've been going on
Don't want to be spiteful
act like a child
It's got this itchy imagination
It drive me wild
Don't want to be lonely
all my life
why can't I be happy, happy, happy
all the time?
Chorus
And it's now or never
I can't wait one more year

❝Blue Water❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
Born on the water
raised by the sea
Warm sand, a sail in hand
That's when he felt free
Life finally found him
On one fateful day
Father cried, and mom near died
as he drove away
They put him in their soldier clothes
And showed him how to stand
They pushed him to his breaking point
Then pulled him back again
Is it any wonder
That he reached for the highest star
he learned to fly as the years went by
like no other
Is it any wonder
that he knew what he needed most
He tamed machines
But still he dreamed of the water
Blue water
Work filled the daytime
Fun filled the nights
Wild oats, but no one close
It just wasn't right
Love finally found him
She gave him a son
The home fires, they burned a while
But still he felt undone
They called him to the map one day
and showed him where to strike
They loaded up their best machines
with guns and men that night
Chorus
The faster he raced ahead
the slower he seemed to go
Alone in his heart
he was alone with his radio
And as the sun cast fires on the wings
he tried to remember
what his father must have told him
Is this any way to be a man
just running from who I am?
Is it any wonder
that he found what he was looking for
His heart was found
as he flew straight down to the water
Blue water

❝Find the One❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
There's life in the desert
But there's not much luck at all
and no sense in wasting your tears
She was a dancer
With a pure and simple past
and plenty of love all around
pirouettes and postcards
turning over in her mind
days that went on and on
and on and on and on
This road goes a long, long way
and the time can slip away
it's easier said than done:
Find the one
He was a ranger
from a town not far away
they met at the old canyon lake
He told her if she listened
to the painted desert stone
She'd heard the world a-turning
round and round and round
Chorus
Instrumental
Chorus
There's love where you make it
Doesn't matter where you are
Someday we all find the one

❝I Cry❞
© 2006 Grant Maloy Smith
The wind is blower colder
and pushing at my face
the trees that grew
the streets I knew
are gone without a trace
Chains rust into choices
and pain turns into stone
Still I hear the voices
calling me back home
But I won't go back
I can't do that
My heart can't be alone
I cry - cry for the millions
I cry - cry for the children
I cry
There's quite enough to do here
for a hundred years or so
We clear away
the broken clay
so one small blade can grow
the wind is blowing harder
and tearing at my clothes
but faith is more than fashion
and this is what I chose
Chorus
I lost the child
who felt the world go 'round
Who flew a hundred times
but never left the ground
But something came alive in me just now
Find your second star
before you don't know how
Instrumental
Chorus

Pack up the wagons
put away the songs
we're gonna blow this town
thought I could do it
looks like I was wrong
can't seem to shake this frown
Came out of nowhere
singing, raising Cain
now here I'm running
back the way I came
They said "Rainmaker,
dream shaper
Make us some magic
wave your hand'
"Rainmaker
Dream shaper
Make us all love you
if you can"
My mama loved me
like an only child
My father let me play
I heard the music
I was young and wild
I threw it all away
