Turn Your Head Around
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
You turn your head around
But you don't see me
I've been in this state
as long as I remember
and that's a long, long time
You're leading me around and round
until I'm dizzy
A frequent flyer on this trip to nowhere
and that's a long, long way
Wasting away
I've got love that I can't share
If you can't put both feet on the ground
Just turn your head around
You turn your head around and laugh
at my condition
I'm the captain of a sinking rowboat
And it's a going down
Right now the only thing that matters
The only way to rearrange the patterns of this aching
Is if you turn your head around
Wasting away
I've got love that I can't share
If you can't put both feet on the ground
I can't break from my tradition
I can't act like someone else
If only you would listen
to the names I call myself
And though I tried and failed
you never heard me cry, cry, cry
what a great big mess I made
But no way
You treat me like a stranger
who showed up at your door
But baby, I need more, more, more, more
Instrumental
You turn your head around
But you don't see me
I've been in this state

Bringing Back Memories
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
Hoding to the edge of you
can't let your ghost slip through
you always seem to fade
but now you're safe by me
Bringing back memories
Singing from a scattered past
old voices drifting back
things that I thought I lost
like bottles tossed to the sea
Bringing back memories
You walk the way you did
all those years ago
You say I'm still a kid
But my, how you've grown
Oh, it's too much for me
Holding you close is
Bringing back memories
Clinging to the edge of time
I've got to keep my mind
Can't let you bring me down
back to the sound of a dream
Bringing back memories
Singing from a scattered past
old voices drifting back
things that I thought I lost
like bottles tossed to the sea
Bringing back memories
Chorus
Like a distant fire
the heat is too far away
To reinspire what was once is gone
and we moved on from that place
A wolf cries alone in the night
he says you can't go home again
and he's right
yeah, he's right
Chorus

My Bright Idea
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
Had a wisdom tooth out today
I feel smarter
but I guess its just the novocaine
This whole year I've been in a rut
every thing I touch
goes belly up
Gotta scream, gotta shout
I had a thought,
so hear me out:
My bright idea
is that you save me
we go together
like biscuits and gravy
my bright idea
is that you love me
we belong together
like bleeding and rugby
They tried to make me a senator
I said no because I'd rather
do some honest work
But noble stands
won't pay my pay
I keep keep trying but I just can't
catch a break
Gotta scream, gotta shout
I had a thought,
so hear me out:
chorus:
My bright idea
is that you save me
we go together
like biscuits and gravy
my bright idea
is that you love me
we belong together
sub-chorus:
Shut my face
shut my yap
Take the elevator
got a great big trap
like an alligator
cut my hair
get a tat
like the other fellas
come home late
act strange
just to make you jealous
Pop the top
in the diamond name
driving 91
blow a kiss
wag a finger
at the RADAR gun
we belong, we belong, we belong
Had a big bowl of courage
but it hasn't started working yet
grab my coat, grab my hat
but I haven't moved an inch since then
please coach, you gotta put me in
Gotta scream, gotta shout
I had a thought,
so hear me out:
My bright idea...
(sub-chorus alone, then behind chorus)
We belong together
In love forever
My bright idea
We belong together

Reach Inside
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith and Brett Geaber
I can read your mind
by the pictures that float on your face
like the clouds in a bright blue sky
There's love and there's peace
But there's pain down deep
And I'm standing here wishing
that the heart that you're missing was mine
I can hear you now
laughing so hard that you started to cry
so I kissed your face
All of your life has been leading to this time
All of your hopes are a heartbeat away
Reach inside
inside yourself there's a hero
Reach inside
Where there's a will there's a way
Reach inside
Inside yourself there's a hero
No matter what the moment is
or even the size is
Will you step to this moment
when this moment arises
Or will you hide from this moment
behind your disguises?
They say the sky's the limit
and it's all where your eyes is
Are your eyes on the prize
Are you worried about the odds?
The bumps in the road
Obstacles and sand bars
The bumps and the bruises
Deep wounds and deep scars
Whatever the struggle
will you reach for the stars?
You feel you're the best
But you're stuck on the bench
When it's your turn to swing
will you swing for the fence?
Or is the pressure too much
will you freeze up and tense?
The power's in your hands
I forgot to mentch
But don't take my word for it
make it your own
No matter your gender,
your race or skin tone
Take a risk, take a leap
to the unknown
'Cause if you never do
then you will never know
Reach inside
if there's a will there's a way
Reach inside
and climb that hill today
If someone says you can't
then prove them wrong
'Cause what don't break you
will make you strong
Don't give up because this race is long
I'm gonna race to the finish
until the race is done
And if I can do this
Then this race is won
And I'll stand on my own two
and raise the one!
Reach inside

Standing Up
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
The morning TV shows the tragic sight
He drinks his coffee
and he ties his tie
He books a ticket
he takes a flight
so scared about what he might find
But he's standing up for what is right
She still remembers
clear as a bell
The earth was moving
and the buildings fell
So many children
so little time
her healing hands were sore in need
yeah, she was standing up for you and me
They're standing up
to the dark
for the light inside your heart
And they ask for nothing
Because this time we can't wait
for somebody else
Just stand up
When the waters rise
If you've got a place to stay
That's warm and dry
You might get taken
Once in a while
There are people who have gone astray
But you're standing up
anyway
They're standing up
to the dark
for the light inside a heart
And they ask for nothing
woh, yeah
Because this time we can't wait
for somebody else
Break
Stand up for the lonely kids
who never had a friend
Stand up for the woman
Who's been abused again
If you don't have money
give a little time
There's people in the world who need
Children everywhere to feed
If we're standing up
We're all free

Right Now

I tried to catch you
Tried to get you
I'm in love and it's a bad one
Right now
Those crazy clothes you wear
Your na-na-na-na-na-na-never-ending long brown hair
Long brown
I'm going down
I'm gonna drown in my own shower
Save me!
Right now
Come on, I mean it, really save me
Right now
Come on, come on - Save me
Right now
Release the hounds and let your hair down
Right now
I've been in love
But it was never like a shove
off of a subway platform
As I stuck a perfect faceplant on the third rail
When I dance it's like a trance
It's like a clown has got my feet
But he's not funny
It's really not my fault
Now every hundredth of a second
I'm alone is like a leap year
Tear down the barricades
Remove the crime scene tape
Unchain me
It's not too late
I'm going down
I'm gonna drown in my own shower
Save me!
Right now
Come on, I mean it, really save me
Right now
Come on, come on, come on - Save me

I'll put these scissors down

What She Wants
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
Spider webs and scrambled eggs and barns
The sights and sounds stay with me
That Summer at her Grandma's farm
I saw another girl inside
Who didn't want to leave
'Cause what she wants
Is the warm embrace of family
In that easy world
And when she thinks about tomorrow
It's what she wants
It's what she wants
We're far away from rolling fields of green
and sawdust in our hair
With every year that passes by
She smiles but I can see her eyes
She wishes we were there
'Cause what she wants
Is the warm embrace of family
In that easy world
And when she thinks about tomorrow
It's what she wants
It's what she wants
Living every minute
Loving every day
From the porch swing where she's in it
She can feel the old tree sway
There's tractor on the B Road
As the sun begins to fade
She can smell her Grandma's cooking
And she can see her Grandpad wave
Instrumental
Spider webs and scrambled eggs and barns

I can sleep beside the mountains
I can feel the planet turn
I can hear the found winds counting
as the sun begins to burn
I was never much for wandering
always knew where I belonged
In my corner of these mountains
I never felt so strong
"Hey, way up - there's a star for you,"
that's what my pa said on the porch
when I was just a little boy
Colorado, where eagles fly
Colorado, you never felt so small
you can stand inside your mother's arms and cry
It's your home sweet home
in the sky
I'm not the kind for praying
you won't find me much in church
that's doesn't mean I don't need saving
every day I walk this Earth
There were times when I was reverent
when I fell down to my knees
when I cried for plain forgiveness
when my baby needed me
"Hey, way up - there's a star for you,"
that's what my pa said on the porch

Why Don't We Try Love?
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
You were the best thing
the purest ray of sunshine
I ever knew
I never felt the beating of my heart
I saw the future
my past and present
rolled up into one
A perfect bright sky
shine, shine, shine
How could we let ourselves down
We got to take the wheel
and turn this thing around
Why don't we try love?
Why don't we try giving?
Why don't we treat life
like it was worth living?
When we close up our hearts
and act like we're winning
Why don't we try love?
Just like the beginning
You were my lifeguard
you saved me from the deep end
I never knew
that I was breathing until you showed me how
I took the long way
The twists and turns that
made us into one
under a bright sky
shine, shine, shine
How could we let ourselves down
We got to take the wheel
and turn this thing around
Why don't we try love?
Why don't we try giving?
Why don't we treat life
like it was worth living?
When we close up our hearts
and act like we're winning
Why don't we try love?
Just like the beginning
I'm not afraid anymore
I'm not a slave to hesitation
But when we're hurt inside
And words come out that we should hide
and pain is what we're thinking of
it's not too late!
Why don't we try love?

A perfect bright sky
shine, shine, shine
How could we let ourselves down
We got to take the wheel
and turn this thing around
Why don't we try love?
Why don't we try giving?
Why don't we treat life
like it was worth living?
When we close up our hearts
and act like we're winning
Why don't we try love?
Just like the beginning
You were my lifeguard
you saved me from the deep end
I never knew
that I was breathing until you showed me how
I took the long way
The twists and turns that
made us into one
under a bright sky
shine, shine, shine
How could we let ourselves down
We got to take the wheel
and turn this thing around
Why don't we try love?
Why don't we try giving?
Why don't we treat life
like it was worth living?
When we close up our hearts
and act like we're winning
Why don't we try love?
Just like the beginning
I'm not afraid anymore
I'm not a slave to hesitation
But when we're hurt inside
And words come out that we should hide
and pain is what we're thinking of
it's not too late!
Why don't we try love?

Kill the Stranger Inside You
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
When you were a girl
You thought you could fly
Made up the rules in your own paradise
A hard luck case
Nobody's chlld
Who would not be tamed
Your heart was wild
Sugar and spice
They turned into outrage
You cut yourself deep
Your men were like switchblades
Retreated alone to the back of your heart
Now the curtains are drawn
Your stage is dark
You raise the ramparts
and you batten hatches
You gave a pyro a big box of matches
To burn the only bridge
that led straight to your heart
Now the only way in is to blow you apart
It's the last chance for a rescue
You've got to kill her:
Kill the stranger inside you
Kill the stranger inside you
I love your face
the face that you hide
I love your hands
the hands that you tied
I love your neck
and the curve of your spine
I love the taste
of your lips on mine
I gave my love like a passionate fierce thing
You treated it like
an embarrasing piercing
Counted your hopes and your dreams like losses
Shouldered your wings
Bore them like crosses
You raise the ramparts
and you batten hatches
You gave a pyro a big box of matches
To burn the only bridge
that led straight to your heart
Now the only way in is to blow you apart
It's the last chance for a rescue
You've got to kill her:
Kill the stranger inside you
Kill the stranger inside you
Instrumental
You lock the door
and turn down the lights
You wish I was with you
Especially tonight
You burn your arm moving
your plate to a tray
But the dinner is tasteless
You push it away
Now the doctors and nurses are pacing
Sirens scream on the ambulance racing
"Female; no pulse; not much hope..."
Hanging with gossamer wings by a rope
You raise the ramparts
and you batten hatches
You gave a pyro a big box of matches
To burn the only bridge
that led straight to your heart
Now the only way in is to blow you apart
It's the last chance for a rescue

20 Years
© 2011 Grant Maloy Smith
It doesn't feel that long ago
When I look back
it seems my road led right here all along
Faces of so many friends
love begins and never ends
Like an old familiar song
Turn back the pages
I can't believe it's you
Turn back the pages
I can't believe it's me
When I was young
I pushed myself
I couldn't wait to see
what life held in store for me
I thought I was invincible
bloody shins and bruises
were like doors to me
But right from the beginning
my parents showed me
There's several kinds of winning
In 20 years
I can move a mountain
but not alone - not alone
In 20 years
I can make a difference
But not alone - not alone
This house was built on fire
that burns in every heart's desire
to leave something that lasts
for 20 years
Faces like a tapestry
Voices like a symphony
It's so alive
It's two steps ahead and one step back
But I know we're on the right track
yes, I know we are
But right from the beginning
my parents showed me
There's several kinds of winning
In 20 years
I can move a mountain
